What App Store Optimization Actually Is

App store optimization (ASO) is the practice of improving how your app ranks and converts inside the App Store and Google Play. The goal is two things at once: get more people to find your app through search, and get more of those people to tap "install."

Those two goals pull in slightly different directions. Ranking well requires the right keywords in the right places. Converting well requires screenshots, a strong icon, a punchy first line of your description, and ratings that don't scare people off. A good ASO service works on both levers together.

ASO is not the same as mobile SEO. Mobile SEO is about getting your app's marketing website to rank on Google. ASO is about what happens inside the stores themselves, which have their own algorithms, their own ranking signals, and their own rules about what you can and cannot do.

Why the Stores Are Worth Treating Seriously

According to Sensor Tower's annual State of Mobile report, organic search inside the App Store and Google Play drives roughly 65% of all app downloads. Paid user acquisition has become expensive enough that most apps cannot sustain growth on ads alone.

That ratio makes organic visibility inside the stores one of the highest-leverage things you can invest in. Yet most app teams treat ASO as an afterthought: they pick a name, write a description in an hour, upload whatever screenshots the designer made, and move on.

A single well-researched keyword swap in your app's title field can lift category ranking by 10 to 30 positions in a competitive vertical. That is not a gradual improvement; it happens within the next algorithm refresh cycle, typically 1 to 7 days.

What an App Store Optimization Service Actually Covers

Not every app store optimization service covers the same ground. Here is what a comprehensive service includes, broken into tiers:

Tier 1: On-metadata optimization

  • App title and subtitle (App Store) or short description (Google Play)
  • Keyword field (App Store only, 100 characters)
  • Long description copy
  • App category selection
  • Developer name as a ranking signal

Tier 2: Creative asset optimization

  • Icon design or redesign based on competitive analysis
  • Screenshot sequencing, captions, and layout
  • Preview video (if the app supports it)
  • Feature graphic (Google Play)

Tier 3: Off-metadata signals

  • Rating and review velocity strategy
  • Localization for additional markets
  • A/B testing via Google Play's built-in experiments or App Store's Product Page Optimization tool
  • Backlink profile for the store listing URL

Many agencies only offer Tier 1. Some fold in Tier 2. True full-service ASO covers all three. Ask any prospective provider which tiers are included and which cost extra.

How the App Store and Google Play Differ

The two stores weight ranking signals differently. This matters when you are deciding where to spend effort first.

The practical implication: on the App Store, your title and subtitle carry nearly all of your keyword weight. On Google Play, your description can add dozens of additional keywords. You need a different content strategy for each, not a copy-paste.

How Long ASO Takes to Show Results

This is the question most clients ask first. The honest answer varies by what you are measuring:

  • Metadata updates (title, subtitle, keywords): ranking changes appear within 1 to 7 days of an app update going live.
  • Creative asset changes (screenshots, icon): conversion rate changes are visible in 2 to 4 weeks once enough impressions accumulate.
  • A/B test results: statistically significant results need 2 to 6 weeks of traffic depending on your current install volume.
  • Ratings improvement: meaningful movement in average rating takes 4 to 12 weeks depending on your review request implementation and existing review count.
  • Organic ranking growth in a new keyword cluster: 6 to 16 weeks, because the stores factor in engagement signals (installs, retention, session depth) that take time to build.

If an ASO agency promises dramatic organic ranking improvement in under two weeks, they are either selling you keyword stuffing (which gets apps penalized) or they are not being straight with you.

What an ASO Service Costs

Cost varies by scope, not by magic. Here is a realistic breakdown:

DIY with an ASO tool (AppFollow, AppTweak, Sensor Tower)

  • Tool cost: $50 to $400 per month depending on features and app count
  • Your time: 4 to 8 hours per month to research, update, and track
  • No creative asset work included

Freelance ASO specialist

  • A focused metadata audit and rewrite for one app, one language: typically 15 to 25 hours of work
  • At realistic agency-quality rates, that puts a one-time audit in the $150 to $375 range
  • Monthly retainer for ongoing tracking and iteration: 8 to 20 hours per month, roughly $80 to $300 per month

ASO agency, full-service (metadata plus creative plus A/B testing)

  • Initial setup and audit: 30 to 60 hours of combined work across research, copywriting, design, and strategy
  • That scopes realistically to $300 to $900 for a one-time engagement
  • Monthly retainer covering ongoing optimization, testing, and localization: 20 to 50 hours per month, or roughly $200 to $750 per month depending on how many markets and how much creative iteration is included

Those ranges are based on the real hours these projects take. A two-language, one-platform ASO project is closer to the low end. A six-language, two-platform project with monthly creative refreshes and A/B testing is at the high end.

Our own engineering team's take: the biggest waste of ASO budget we see is clients spending $400/month on a retainer but never shipping an app update, so the metadata changes never go live. Your app release cadence is the single biggest constraint on how fast ASO can move.

When to Hire an Agency vs. Do It Yourself

Hire an agency (or a specialist) when:

  • You have already launched and have real install data but organic growth has stalled
  • You are entering a new language market and do not have in-house localization expertise
  • Your category is competitive enough that keyword research requires dedicated tooling
  • Your team has no one who has done ASO before and the learning curve would cost more than the retainer

Do it yourself when:

  • Your app is pre-launch and you are still validating the concept
  • You are in a niche category with under 50 direct competitors
  • You have someone on the team who has shipped at least one successful app before
  • Your monthly install volume is under 500 (A/B testing will not reach significance fast enough to justify agency cost)

ASO for E-commerce Apps Specifically

If you are running a shopping or e-commerce app, ASO works alongside your broader acquisition strategy but has some specific dynamics worth knowing.

E-commerce apps compete on branded and non-branded terms. Branded terms (your own app name) are easy wins. Non-branded terms ("online shopping app," "buy sneakers online") are extremely competitive and dominated by large players with enormous install velocity.

For a new ecommerce app development project, the ASO strategy should start before launch: pick a name with searchable terms in it, choose a category that is accurate but less saturated than "Shopping" if possible, and build your review request flow into the initial build rather than bolting it on afterward.

Rating velocity matters more in e-commerce than in utility apps because users are being asked to hand over payment information. A 4.6-star app with 800 reviews converts on install pages at a measurably higher rate than a 4.2-star app with 50 reviews in the same category.

ASO also plays a meaningful role in regulated verticals. If you are building a fintech software development product, your app store listing must balance keyword density with the precise language required by financial regulators, and your screenshots cannot make promises your compliance team has not signed off on. That constraint narrows your creative range but does not reduce the importance of optimizing within it.

Common ASO Mistakes That Cost Real Money

  • Ignoring the subtitle on App Store. It is a second title field for ranking purposes. Leaving it as a tagline wastes keyword capacity.
  • Using the same screenshots for all markets. A screenshot designed for English-speaking users in the US will underperform in Japan or Germany. Localized screenshots lift conversion rates by 15 to 40% in non-English markets according to multiple ASO agency case studies.
  • Not responding to negative reviews. Both stores show your response to users browsing the listing. A thoughtful reply to a 1-star review can visibly shift conversion rates.
  • Skipping the preview video. Preview videos on the App Store appear before screenshots and autoplay silently. They lift conversion for the right app types (games, tools with visual workflows) by meaningful amounts.
  • Treating ASO as a one-time task. The store algorithms change. Your competitors iterate their metadata. A listing you optimized 18 months ago is almost certainly no longer optimal.

Working With Dignizant on App Store Optimization

Dignizant is a software development agency that works on mobile apps from initial build through ongoing growth. Our work spans mobile app development, ecommerce app development, and supporting services including software testing and QA services that feed directly into store readiness and release cadence. We also work alongside digital marketing efforts so that ASO and broader acquisition strategy reinforce each other rather than pulling in different directions.

If your app is already in market and you want a straight assessment of where your ASO is leaving traffic on the table, or if you are planning a new app and want ASO baked into the build strategy from the start rather than added later, we can help with both. We treat ASO as part of the product work, not a separate marketing service bolted on at the end.
