Portfolio screenshots tell you almost nothing about whether a company can build ecommerce software well. Ask for these instead.

  • A live store they built, not a mockup. Run it through PageSpeed Insights yourself. Anything under a 70 mobile score on a commerce site they're proud of is a warning sign.
  • Their approach to payment security. They should be able to explain PCI DSS scope reduction (using tokenization, hosted fields) without you prompting them. If they say "the platform handles all of that" for a custom checkout build, that's a red flag, not reassurance.
  • How they handle inventory sync at scale. Ask specifically what happens when two channels sell the last unit of the same SKU at the same time. A team that's actually built commerce systems will have a real answer.
  • Post-launch support structure. Ecommerce software needs monitoring during sales events, not just a warranty period. Ask what happens if checkout breaks during a flash sale at 2am.
  • Whether they've handled your specific complexity before. Multi-currency, multi-warehouse, subscription billing, and B2B pricing are each their own specialty. A team strong in one isn't automatically strong in another.
A five-minute test that filters out most weak vendors: ask them to walk through exactly what breaks first under Black Friday-level traffic on the architecture they're proposing. Vague answers here predict vague delivery later.
